SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana women's basketball secured its first win of the 2024-25 season in an 87-77 defeat of Hastings College on Wednesday afternoon inside the Elmen Center.
 
The victory marks the first of 
Nate Vogel era and moves the Vikings to 1-5 overall on the season as the Broncos drop to 3-2.
 
Hannah Burg led the charge with her 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists as 
Olivia Hayenga joined in with 21 points, three rebounds and three steals and 
Brinlee McRae added in 18 points, five steals and three rebounds.
 
Burg also went a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and McRae also went 3-of-4 from 3-point land.
 
The Vikings shot 41.7% from the floor, 42.3% from beyond the arc on 11-of-26 shooting and 80% from the free throw line. Augustana also forced 28 turnovers for Hastings and held the advantage in steals 16-7.
 
Action started hot and fast in the first quarter as the Broncos and Vikings traded layups and 3-pointers, tying up at 9-all with 6:22 remaining. The battle continued until McRae and 
Kaz Parks hit back-to-back triples to put the home team ahead 19-16. Hastings responded with a run to gain the lead, but Burg hit another shot from long range to take a two-point lead until a jumper tied things up at 26.
 
Hayenga struck first in the second quarter and 
Paige Grant soon followed, helping put the Vikings up four. The Broncos clawed back until four free throws from Burg and two from Parks made it a 38-31. And Augustana continued to push on the gas. A sizzling string of seven straight points created enough momentum for the home team to take the 47-37 lead into the locker room.
 
Hastings made two baskets to open the third in an attempt to close in, but back-to-back layups from 
Payton Hardy and Burg made it a 12-point advantage. The hot shooting continued as Burg scored five and McRae dropped three within 60 seconds. Another triple from McRae forced the largest lead of the night at 64-47. Shots began to fall for the visitors, but the Vikings always responded just the same. Despite a Hastings layup with 15 seconds remaining in the quarter, Burg hit a jumper to take the 72-60 lead at the break.
 
The fourth quarter was an outright defensive battle, as neither team scored until the 6:53 mark. 
CJ Adamson immediately responded and knocked down two shots from beyond the arc, joined in by a layup from Hayenga to make it 80-65. The Broncos rattled off eight points to make it a seven-point differential but Augustana found itself at the free throw line six times to help secure the 87-77 victory.

Augustana will host its first NSIC weekend of the season at the Sanford Pentagon with a Friday, Dec. 6 game against Winona State at 5:30 p.m. and a 3:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, Dec. 7 against Minnesota State.
