Viking Women's Basketball Drops Friday Contest to UMD

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana women's basketball team fell 68-50 at the hands of Minnesota Duluth on Friday night at the Sanford Pentagon.

The Vikings move to 5-14 overall and 4-11 in the NSIC, while the Bulldogs move to 13-7, 10-6.

Lauren Sees scored 13 points, enough to move her to seventh on the Viking's all-time scoring list. Jennifer Aadland recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Michaela Jewett scored seven points while grabbing eight rebounds.

Michaela Jewett scored four of the first six Viking points to take a 6-5 lead just over two minutes into the game. After over two and a half minutes of scoreless action, UMD knocked down a three before Jewett hit a layup to even the score at 8-8 with 4:21 left in the quarter.

The Bulldogs went on to score eight of the next 11 points to take a 16-11 lead. After that lead grew to eight, Aadland finished a feed from CJ Adamson just before the buzzer, cutting the AU deficit to 20-14 into the second quarter.

Opening the second quarter with a pair of buckets was Johanna Miller in her first game since November. The layups brought the Vikings within two at 20-18. The Bulldogs scored four of the next five points to grow their lead to five with 5:14 to play in the half, but the Vikings continued to climb.

Sees and Aadland each scored a bucket to get back within one. After UMD grew its lead back to four, Kelsey Willems connected on a 3-pointer for her first points of the night and Sees followed with a layup to take a 30-29 lead with 1:54 remaining. Each team knocked down a bucket to close the half as Augstana took a 32-31 lead into the locker room.

The Bulldogs opened the second half scoring with a layup to reclaim the lead, but Phipps went on to convert an and-one on the next possession to steal the lead back at 35-33. In the next six minutes of action, UMD outscored AU 13-0 to take their largest lead of the game to that point at 47-35. Sees would score five in a 7-0 run to get back within five, but a Bulldog buzzer beater from deep grew their lead to 50-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

The UMD momentum continued in the fourth as they went on an 8-2 run to take a 58-44 lead with 7:18 left in the game. Willems ended the run with a 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs followed with a layup with just over six minutes left.

A two and a half minute scoreless stretch was put to an end with an Adamson triple to cut the AU deficit to 60-50 with 3:27 remaining. UMD scored the final eight points of the game to bring the game to its final score.

The Vikings return to the Elmen Center on Saturday afternoon, hosting Concordia-St. Paul for a white out at 3:30 p.m.
