Baseball Knocks Off DWU in Midweek Contest

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The No. 17 Augustana baseball team knocked off Dakota Wesleyan 12-0 in seven innings on Thursday afternoon at Ronken Field.

The Vikings earned their 30th win of the season and 13th in a row, moving to 30-6 while the Tigers fall to 15-26.

Every starter reached base at least once for Augustana. The Vikings had eight hits and drew 12 walks, led by a 2 for 4 effort from Nate Davis. Davis had a home run, two runs scored, and four RBI while adding a walk.

Joe Kolbeck and Spencer Marenco each collected a hit and scored three runs. Kolbeck drew three walks and drove in a run while Marenco walked twice. Jason Axelberg walked twice and scored two runs, and Ryan Clementi had a hit, walk, and two RBI.

The pitching staff was electric, earning the Vikings their 10th shutout of the season. As a group, they allowed four hits in seven innings and struck out 12. Aidan Torpey opened the game, going 2+ innings and struck out a pair. Logan Von Berge struck out four in 1 2/3 innings, Kai Taylor went 1 1/3 with a strikeout, Hayden Kelberlau struck out all three batters he faced, and Maddox Foss had two strikeouts in the final inning.

The first four Vikings reached base to strike first. Kolbeck drew a walk, Clementi singled, and Jack Hines singled to load the bases. Kolbeck flashed the speed on a squibber to first off the bat of Drey Dirksen, beating out a throw home to give Dirksen a single and score the first run of the game.

To lead off the second, Davis sent a blast to left field to give AU a 2-0 lead. Bryson Bohannon followed with a walk and Kolbeck doubled to put the pair in scoring position with no outs.

Bohannon and Kolbeck each advanced a base on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Clementi, and Kolbeck scored on a sacrifice fly from Hines to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead through two innings.

Free bases to open the third inning gave AU a chance to score some more. Sam Siegel, Axelberg, and Marenco each walked to fill the bases with no outs. Davis drove in a pair with a single through the left side, and Marenco came around on a groundout up the middle from Bohannon to increase the lead to 7-0.

The walks continued in the fifth as Axelberg, Marenco, and Davis loaded the bases with no outs on three consecutive walks. After a strikeout, Kolbeck and Clementi each drew a walk of their own to score a pair of runs. Maddox Baggs earned an RBI single after a fresh arm was summoned, and Jake Lundquist lifted a sac fly to drive in the 11th run of the game for the Vikings.

AU was able to muster its final run in the sixth inning. Marenco smashed a one-out double to left field before advancing to third on a balk. Davis drove in his fourth run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Marenco and rounding out the scoring.

The Vikings set up for a matchup between the top two offenses in the NSIC, hosting a three-game set against Concordia-St. Paul. The teams will open with a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch slated for 1:30 p.m.
