Melsted Garners 800th Career Win as Viking Softball Extends Win Streak

WINONA, Minn. – Head coach Gretta Melsted captured her 800th career win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader sweep against Winona State. The Vikings extended their win streak to 20 after a powerful day at the plate. 

Augustana improved to 38-13 on the year and 23-1 in the NSIC. Winona State slipped to 28-18 overall and 12-8 in the NSIC. 

Game One: Augustana 11, Winona State 1 
Augustana opened up the scoring in the first inning and rode the lead to victory with Grace Glanzer striking out four batters in a complete game on the mound. Andrea Cain started the game out hot with a lead-off bomb to left field. 

Winona State equalized the game with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. 

Augustana's bats caught fire in the fifth inning with a total of six runs. Cain opened up the inning with her second blast of the game. Desi Cuevas followed up the Viking home run to deep right center. 

The score moved to 5-1 as Stella Harber deposited two runs with a double off the wall, scoring Gracey Brink and Torri Chute

Liz Dierks joined the party with a single through the right side to score Harber and Nicole Bellis, pushing the Vikings lead to 7-1. Glanzer struck out two batters looking to finish off the fifth inning. 

Ashton Dorman scored the eighth run in the seventh inning on an error by the second baseman. Cain collected her third hit of the game with a single through the right side and scored Hailey Houston and Dierks for her fourth RBI of the game. Glanzer made quick work of the Warriors' Batting lineup in the bottom of the seventh to secure Melsted's 800th career win. 

Augustana collected 12 hits with three home runs. Glanzer moved to 18-3 on the season with four strikeouts and one earned run. 

Game Two: Augustana 11, Winona State 8
The Vikings continued their momentum into the second game as they took an early 1-0 lead after Brink stole home in the second inning. The Warriors equalized the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to left center. 

Buckman regained Augustana's lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third to bring home Cain. 

Winona State took the lead in the bottom of the third off back-to-back singles, bringing the game 4-2 in favor of the Warriors. 

Cain answered back for the Vikings with a grand slam in the top of the fourth as she powered home her third home run of the day. 

Augustana controlled the fifth and sixth innings backed by Brink and Harber home runs. The Warriors scored their fifth run of the day in the bottom of the sixth. 

Buckman joined the party with a home run in the seventh before Bellis scored a two-RBI single to make the game 11-5. 

Winona State made its best attempt to comeback but fell short by a score of 11-8.

Augustana collected 12 hits for 10 RBIs and relied on Lexi Lander, Helene Krage and Haley Grimmius who combined for six strikeouts.

Augustana continues its road trip as it is set to face Concordia-St. Paul Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader slated for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
