SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana Viking wrestling turned on the fire power and took down the University of Mary Marauders on Friday night in a 28-13 victory inside the Elmen Center.
The win pushes the Vikings to 6-7 on the season and 3-2 in conference action while UMary drops to 3-6 and 1-3. Friday also marks the second matchup between the Vikings and Marauders this season, having previously faced off at the NWCA National Duals earlier this month.
With the night starting at 149 pounds, No. 2
Cael Larson kicked off action with an absolutely dominant statement. After just over a minute of grappling, Larson suddenly gained the upper hand and put his opponent on his back. And in a dazzling 1:15, the pin was called and the Vikings were off to a strong start.
Coy Gunderson added to the momentum at 174 pounds, fighting off a scoreless first period to log the first points of the match with an escape in the second. Wyatt Lidberg of UMary then responded with a takedown to go ahead 3-1 and though Gunderson earned another escape, he remained down heading into the final period. Lidberg scored an escape of his own to increase the lead but in the final 30 seconds of action, Gunderson logged a convincing takedown to secure the 5-4 decision.
It was all
Cade Mueller in the bout at 184, with the No. 13-ranked wrestler claiming a takedown in the first period. He continued to control the momentum through the second and third periods before finally tallying in an escape to secure the 4-0 decision.
Max Ramberg came out swinging at 197, quickly logging a takedown. He carried that power into the second period, taking control with an escape and another takedown. Two more takedowns and a bonus point for riding time added to the domination as No. 4 Ramberg claimed the 14-2 major decision.
The No. 3 wrestler at 125 pounds,
Jaxson Rohman put on a clinic early on with a takedown and four-point nearfall in the first period. Another takedown in the opening seconds of the second period made it a 10-0 advantage, but that didn't seem to matter much as Rohman worked his opponent onto his back and got the pin in 3:42.
In the final match of the night,
Alex Mentzer earned a forfeit at 141 pounds to secure the dual for Augustana.
