Jack Hastreiter had a career night from deep and
Akoi Akoi flirted with a triple-double to lift the Augustana Vikings to an 85-75 victory over No. 13 Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday night inside the R/A Facility.
The win moves Augustana to 10-11 overall and 7-8 in the NSIC while the NSIC-leading Mustangs fall to 17-4, 12-3. The win also snapped an eight game win streak for SMSU, with AU wins on each side of the streak. The Vikings are now 3-1 against ranked teams on the season.
Hastreiter scored a career-high 24 points on 8 of 9 shooting, including 7 of 7 from deep, off the bench while Akoi had 24 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while going a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line. The seven made 3-pointers by Hastreiter is the second most makes without a miss in program history.
Sam Rensch scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help an offense that shot 46.4 percent (26 of 56) from the field and 50 percent (12 of 24) from deep. Pacing the offense was
Tameron Ferguson, who tallied nine points, six rebounds and five assists without turning the ball over.
Twos from
Tanner Te Slaa and Akoi were followed by a 3-pointer from Rensch to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of action and force a Mustang timeout. A 10-2 Mustang run followed the timeout to put them in front for the first time on the night but a Te Slaa 3-pointer and five Hastreiter points put the Vikings right back in front 17-10 at the 12:43 mark of the first half.
The Vikings and Mustangs went on to trade baskets for nearly five minutes before a
Kelton Coleman 3-pointer with 7:40 left in the first half gave AU its largest lead of the night at 29-21.
A 5-0 SMSU run brought them within three before a Ferguson 3-pointer calmed it down for just a moment. In the final 6:22, SMSU outscored AU 16-4 to take a 42-36 lead into the half.
The Mustang lead grew to nine in the first five second half minutes. A 7-2 Viking run, capped by a Hastreiter 3-pointer, brought them back within 53-49 with 13:38 to go. SMSU briefly ended the run with a jumper but an Akoi putback and a pair of Hastreiter 3-pointers sandwiched a Mustang layup and evened the score at 57-57 with 10:52 to go.
Akoi added a pair of free throws on the other side of a media timeout to give AU a lead and then made a layup after an SMSU 3-pointer to keep the Vikings in front 61-60. The Mustangs chipped back to take a 64-63 lead with 7:31 to play before an AU avalanche sealed it.
Hastreiter reclaimed the lead with a 3-pointer and after a Mustang free throw, Ferguson added a pair of free throws. SMSU countered with a layup and then Hastreiter hit a pair of 3-pointers on each side of an Akoi layup to put the Vikings in front 76-67 with 1:51 left in the game. In the final stages, AU went 1 of 1 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free throw line to close out another ranked victory.
The Vikings return home on Saturday afternoon, hosting Wayne State at noon at the Elmen Center.
