SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana volleyball team fell 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17 on Friday night at the Elmen Center.
The Vikings fall to 8-9 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC while the Mavericks leap to 15-2, 7-2.
Maya Wente led the Vikings with 10 kills and six blocks while
Brooke Berens and
Lucy Belisle each added nine. Setter
Kiylah Franke recorded a near double-double with 31 assists and nine digs, while
Sydney Tims contributed five kills and
Jazmen Kutey had four kills and five blocks.
After a back-and-forth start to the opening set, Augustana grabbed an early 8-6 lead behind kills from Berens and Wente. Minnesota State responded with a 6-1 run to take control at 12-9. The Vikings stayed within striking distance, pulling to within one at 16-15, but the Mavericks used a late push to claim the first set, 25-20.
Set two was a different story as the Vikings came out with energy. A 4-1 run capped by a Tims kill gave Augustana a 9-7 lead. After the Mavericks tied it at 10-10, Augustana answered with another run — highlighted by blocks from Kutey and Belisle — to take a 16-14 advantage. The Vikings held firm down the stretch, with Wente delivering the final kill for a 25-22 set win to even the match at one apiece.
The third set mirrored the first, with both teams trading points early. Minnesota State used a mid-set surge to create separation, capitalizing on Augustana attack errors to pull ahead 18-14. Despite late kills from Berens and Wente, the Mavericks closed on a 7-3 run to take the frame, 25-20.
In the fourth and final set, Minnesota State jumped ahead 6-2 and never looked back. The Mavericks hit .258 in the set, while Augustana struggled to find rhythm offensively. A late Belisle kill and Tims block brought the Vikings within five, but Minnesota State sealed the match with a 25-17 win.
The Vikings return to the court on Thursday, October 16 at Southwest Minnesota State.
