Vikings Spend Afternoon on the Bases in Road Rout Over HSU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The No. 17/7/9 Augustana baseball team wore out the bases on Saturday afternoon, reaching base 31 times in a 25-7 run-rule shortened victory over Henderson State.

The Vikings move to 3-0 on the season while Henderson State falls to 2-5.

Augustana had 16 hits, drew 13 walks and got plunked twice in the win. Trevor Winterstein went 4 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored in the leadoff spot while Jack Hines scored three runs and drove in a pair while going 1 for 3 in the second spot. Sam Siegel went 3 for 4 with a double and five RBI right behind them and Jason Axelberg drove in a pair in the cleanup spot.

Cole Goeser had a double and three RBI while Joshua Koskie added two hits, two runs scored, three RBI and his second home run in as many days. The Vikings hit .471 as a team (16 for 34), including five hits to lead off an inning and went 11 for 23 with runners on base.

Aidan Torpey earned the victory, throwing three innings in relief and allowing a run on three hits while striking out two. Maddox Foss entered for the seventh inning and struck out two in a scoreless frame.

Five of the first six Vikings crossed the plate to open the ballgame and set the offensive tone. Winterstein opened with a single and Hines walked to set up a two-run double by Siegel to open the scoring.

After Axelberg reached on an error to put runners on the corners, Goeser laid down a perfect sac bunt to drive in Siegel and add a run. Koskie stepped in and delivered a two-run blast to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead.

The Reddies scored a run in the bottom of the inning but the Vikings tacked on plenty more in the second. Kobe Eikmeier led off the inning with a single and Winterstein followed with one of his own to get runners on the corners. Hines yanked a single through the right to score Eikmeier and then stole second before a Siegel walk loaded the bases.

Goeser continued the damage after a Viking strikeout, doubling down the right field line to score Winterstein and Hines. Koskie followed with an RBI single and then Goeser scored on a Ragan Pinnow sac fly to put the Vikings in front 10-1.

HSU chipped back with six unanswered runs over the next three innings to trail 10-7 into the fifth inning. Pinnow opened the fifth with a single and Clementi walked, with both advancing into scoring position with a wild pitch. With one out, Winterstein was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Hines picked up an RBI walk to break the Reddies' run.

Siegel continued doing damage with an RBI single through the right side to score Winterstein and Pinnow and Axelberg laid down a sac bunt that scored Hines and gave the Vikings a 14-7 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Ryan Clementi doubled and Eikmeier walked to lead off the inning. Winterstein, again, singled, this time scoring Clementi and tacking on another run. After a popout, Siegel delivered another hit, this time a single to score Eikmeier and Axelberg added a second sac fly to bring in Winterstein and give the Vikings a 17-7 lead into the seventh.

With the game already in 10-run rule territory, Augustana made sure it would be over after seven. Koskie walked, Joe Kolbeck singled and Clementi walked to load the bases. Bjorn Lind collected his first career RBI with a walk and Ethan Cole entered as a pinch hitter and drew another walk to add a run.

Troy Berg also drew a bases loaded walk as a pinch hitter and Nate Soelter doubled Cole and Lind home. Jack Sutton reached on an error that scored Berg and Carter Heinsch walked to reload the bases with nobody out.

Nate Davie entered for Koskie and drew a walk with the bases loaded and the game came to its final score when Clementi drove a sac fly to center, scoring Heinsch and making the second out of the inning.

The Vikings close the HSU Invitational on Sunday at noon, taking on Ouachita Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
