SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana men's basketball team fell 76-66 at the hands of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday night inside the Elmen Center.
The Vikings drop to 10-14 overall and 7-11 in the NSIC while the Bulldogs jump to 16-7 overall and 11-6 in the NSIC.
Kelton Coleman led AU with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals off the bench.
Sam Rensch added 15 points and six rebounds while
Akoi Akoi scored 14 points and came down with seven rebounds.
Tameron Ferguson had a team-high four assists and also had two steals.
The Bulldogs knocked down a free throw before
Tanner Te Slaa opened the AU scoring with a 3-pointer. Akoi knocked down a 3-pointer of his own to give the Vikings a 6-1 lead in the first 2:01 of gametime.
After over two minutes of scoreless action, UMD knocked down four 3-pointers in a 12-2 run to give themselves a 13-8 lead. Rensch and Coleman teamed up for an 8-0 tun that buzzed AU back in front but five straight Bulldog points reclaimed their lead at 18-16 with 10:20 left in the first half.
Coleman got the lead back for AU when he knocked down three free throws to take a one point lead. The Bulldogs ripped off a 10-0 run that ended on a
Tameron Ferguson layup and two Coleman free throws to made it 28-23 in favor of UMD with 5:21 left. The Bulldogs regained a double-digit lead but a Coleman putback brought the Vikings within 37-28 at the half.
The Vikings scored four of the first six second half points to get within 39-32. Seven straight possessions ended in a basket from there as the two teams played pure basketball to keep the difference at seven points. Back-to-back UMD 3-pointers gave them a game-high 13 point lead before a Rensch 3-pointer ended the run.
Rensch's 3-pointer gave the Vikings life, starting a 12-4 run to get them within 55-50. After a pair of Bulldog free throws, Rensch made a layup and Coleman got a steal-and-score to get within 57-54 and force a UMD timeout.
That was as close as the Vikings would get as the Bulldogs responded with a 10-3 run to go back ahead by double digits at 67-57. Akoi sandwiched two UMD free throws with a pair of 3-pointers to get within 69-63 with 3:59 remaining. The Bulldogs scored seven of the final 10 points, with an Akoi 3-pointer rounding out the AU scoring.
Augustana will be back at home Tuesday night, hosting crosstown rival Sioux Falls at 5:30 p.m., inside the Elmen Center.
