Women's Basketball Earns Hard-Fought Win Over UMD

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Hannah Burg's 19 points and Olivia Hayenga's double-double helped push Augustana women's basketball through a gritty back-and-forth fight to victory in front of a home crowd, downing Minnesota Duluth 58-53 on Saturday night.

The win moves Augustana to 6-18 overall and 4-14 in conference play while the Bulldogs drop to 7-16 and 5-13.

Burg led all scoring across the game with 19 points and a team-high six assists as Olivia Hayenga earned double-double status with 15 points and 11 rebounds alongside a team-high three steals. Isabella Sanneh also pulled down 11 rebounds and Payton Hardy and Hayenga each collected a block.

Augustana out-rebounded its opponent 40-32 and held the Bulldogs to just 22% from behind the arc.

Hayenga drained a 3-pointer to open action but Minnesota Duluth responded with eight straight points. The Vikings then turned up the defense and held their opponents scoreless for the final near-seven minutes of action.

What proceeded for the remainder of the quarter was a stifling 10-0 run from a combined effort of four Vikings to go ahead 13-8.

Hardy hit an early triple to push the Viking lead to 16-10, which quickly faded as UMD rattled off six straight to even the score. The trading of baskets was on and the score tied up four times before the end of the half. Hayenga dropped four points and Hardy's layup forced the final tie, putting the score at 26-26 heading into the locker room.

It was back-and-forth throughout the third quarter, with multiple lead changes in the 10 minutes. Burg's 3-pointer helped the Vikings fight off the Bulldog charge, making it 32-31 with 4:36 remaining. UMD took control once again until Sanneh's free throws put AU ahead.

Four straight points put Augustana up 38-35 off a jumper from Brinlee McRae and four straight points from Minnesota Duluth flipped that. A bucket with 36 seconds remaining in the quarter put the visitors ahead 42-40.

Augustana's 9-2 run over the first three minutes to open up the fourth quarter gave a five-point advantage to the home team. The Vikings wouldn't score again until 3:18 remaining in the game, pushing it to 51-46, but it soon tied up at 51 apiece.

UMD's layup to take the lead at 1:26 was not enough, as Augustana would score the final seven points of the game, locking down the visitors' rally and securing the 58-53 victory.
