SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 10 Augustana softball team split a Friday afternoon doubleheader with St. Cloud State, falling 5-2 before rebounding with a 1-0 victory at Bowden Field.
The Vikings move to 25-7 overall and 7-1 in the NSIC while the Huskies go to 25-9 and 4-2.
GAME ONE: St. Cloud State 5, No. 10 Augustana 2
A strong third inning from the visitors gave the Huskies control and eventually propelled them to a 5-2 win over the Vikings.
AU was able to collect two hits through the first two innings, including a double from
Ashton Dorman, but neither would lead to scoring.
SCSU then turned up the action in the top of third, loading up the bases with a walk, bunt and a fielder's choice. Another fielder's choice brought in two runners before a groundout and a double scored two more for the 4-0 lead.
Sydney Herbert stepped up to the plate in the bottom of that inning and sent a shot over left field on her first pitch. The homerun made it a 4-1 game, but the visitors would again push back.
A single followed by a double put a Husky on third base, who then scored off a bunt for the 5-1 lead. Augustana would plate one more with a sacrifice fly from Herbert with the bases loaded, but the rally would go no further.
Briana Lee and Dorman led with two hits apiece as Herbert added in two RBI. Lee and
Stella Harber each tallied two assists and
Ella Cooper and Dorman totaled eight putouts each.
Grace Glanzer (11-5) took the loss in three innings of work while
Helene Krage made an appearance for four innings. The duo combined for seven strikeouts.
GAME TWO: No. 10 Augustana 1, St. Cloud State 0
A dominant showing in the circle from Glanzer combined with two hits early on helped push the Vikings to a 1-0 bounce-back victory.
Back-to-back singles and a groundout started things off for the home team in the second inning, putting two runners in scoring position. Lee took advantage of the opportunity and sent a sacrifice fly out to center field, scoring Dorman from third base.
That two-hit, one-run inning from the Vikings proved to be the only scoring of the afternoon.
Dorman went 2-for-2 on the day as Cooper and Cain each added in a hit apiece. Lee tallied the lone RBI while Dorman logged 10 putouts and Lee added in three assists.
Glanzer (12-5) mowed through the competition, helping down the Huskies in order in four out of seven innings. She collected 10 strikeouts—including three straight in the third inning—while allowing only two hits in the shutout.
Augustana will return to action on Saturday morning in a weather-adjusted game. Game time is set for 8 a.m. at Bowden Field.
