SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana baseball team played into the Sioux Falls night, sweeping Wayne State 6-2 and 12-8 on Tuesday night at Ronken Field.
The Vikings are now 26-11 overall and 20-7 in the NSIC while the Wildcats move to 20-16, 16-11.
Game 1: Augustana 6, Wayne State 2
Trevor Winterstein went 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the lead off spot.
Jack Hines added a double and a walk.
Carter Heinsch drew three walks and scored a run and
Troy Berg was hit twice with the bases loaded.
Kai Taylor shoved to open the game, allowing just one hit in 4 2/3 innings while striking out three to move to 3-1 on the season.
Harry Blum closed out the fifth inning and allowed a run in the sixth and
Jack Sutton recorded his first career save after throwing the final two frames and allowing a run.
The Vikings grinded through the third inning to get on the board. Winterstein was hit by a pitch and stole second. Heinsch drew a walk and Hines doubled through the right side to drive home Winterstein and get two in scoring position.
Sam Siegel followed with a walk on a full count to load the bases. Berg wore a 3-0 pitch to bring in a run and
Jason Axelberg delivered a sac fly to left, scoring Hines and giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, WSC sent eight to the plate and applied offensive pressure for the entire inning. They were able to score two runs but Sutton would force a flyout to end the frame and keep the Vikings in the lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Vikings ran away.
Ragan Pinnow walked to lead off the inning and
Joe Kolbeck singled with one out and advanced on a throw while Pinnow reached third. Winterstein doubled both home, Heinsch and Hines walked to load the bases and Berg was hit by a pitch to score the final run.
Game 2: Augustana 12, Wayne State 8
Jack Hines reached base four times while
Kobe Eikmeier had three hits and four RBI to help the Vikings to a midweek sweep. All 11 AU hitters had a hit, including a two-out RBI single from
Sam Siegel to break an 8-8 tie in the eighth inning.
Six arms maneuvered through nine innings on the mound.
Joel Van De Stroet allowed a run and struck out two in two innings of work.
Caden Oberbroekling got a pair of outs without a run.
Maddox Foss allowed four in 1/3 of an inning.
Jadon Bast struck out three in 1 2/3 scoreless and
Aidan Torpey allowed three runs, one earned, in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Ryan Clementi earned the victory, firing the final 1 2/3 with three strikeouts to move to 1-1 on the year.
Van De Stroet threw a scoreless top of the first and the Vikings used the bottom of the inning to open the scoring. Heinsch singled with one out and Hines doubled to put the pair in scoring position. Berg rolled one to the shortstop, getting Hines in a pickle and out on the bases but allowing Heinsch to score to make it 1-0.
After the Wildcats evened the score in the second, the Vikings sailed ahead. Pinnow singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Soelter and Lundquist followed with singles to load the bases and Eikmeier drilled one down the left field line to clear the bases for a double.
With one out, Heinsch reached on an infield single to get runners on the corners before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Hines drove in one of them with an RBI single and Berg followed with an RBI groundout to put AU in front 6-1.
A four-run fourth inning brought the Wildcats within one at 6-5. In the bottom of the fifth, Berg led off with a single and Axelberg sent a two-run blast to dead center to make it 8-5 AU.
WSC squared things up with a run in the sixth and two runs in the eighth to make it 8-8.
A Hines walk was sandwiched by a pair of outs in the bottom of the eighth to suppress the Viking comeback attempt. Axelberg kept it alive with an infield single and Siegel broke through, driving a single up the middle to bring in Hines and give AU the lead.
On the very next pitch, Koskie added insurance with a double to the right field corner to score both Axelberg and Siegel. After a
Jake Lundquist walk and a pitching change, Eikmeier delivered the final blow with an RBI single to bring the game to its final score.
The Vikings will be back in action on Friday afternoon in the Twin Cities, taking on Concordia-St. Paul for a three game series starting with a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
