Akoi Signs Contract to Play Professionally in Portugal

9/2/2025 5:03:00 PM

FIGUEIRA DA FOZ, Portugal – Former Augustana men's basketball student-athlete Akoi Akoi has signed a contract to play professionally for Ginásio Clube Figueirense, the Proliga League club announced earlier this week.

Akoi, a native of Sioux Falls, becomes the 25th former Viking to sign a professional contract, the second since Jordan Spencer in 2018.

"I am nothing but blessed and extremely thankful to keep pursuing my dreams on the court playing basketball," Akoi said.

"Words can't explain the amount of relationships, experiences and emotions this orange ball has brought to me over all my years of playing. This opportunity I decided to take on in my life came with the help of my family, coaches and teammates that I still can depend on today and always. I can't wait to get started with Ginásio and compete in the Proliga League in Portugal. I'm excited for this next chapter and looking forward to seeing what the Lord has in store for my future. All glory to Him — the journey continues!"

"I could not be more excited for Akoi and this next chapter in his life," Augustana head coach Cody Schilling said. "The amount of work he has put in over the last five years here at Augustana has been incredible to watch. His work ethic on the court and in the weight room provided him this opportunity. There's no doubt in my mind that he will be a pro's pro and make the most of this professional opportunity. We are so proud of him."

A 6-foot-6, forward, Akoi averaged 13.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while starting all 30 games. The 38th member of the 1,000 point club, Akoi played in 115 games in four seasons while grabbing 499 rebounds and collecting 77 steals. He was named to the East/West Challenge All-Tournament Team after averaging 23.0 points per game, including a game-winning 3-pointer against Black Hills State.
