Vikings Knock off Jamestown to Open NSIC Slate

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana football team opened its NSIC schedule with a 37-7 victory over Jamestown on Saturday afternoon at Kirkeby-Over Stadium.

The Vikings move to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC while the Jimmies drop their first ever DII game.

Gunnar Hensley was efficient, going 21 for 27 with 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns while tallying a 172.2 QB Rating. Jaxon Haynes had eight catches for 93 yards and the first two touchdowns of his career while Marcus Parker ran for his first two career touchdowns on three carries. Ryan Kenny and Max Grand spearheaded the backfield, running for 55 yards and a touchdown and 51 yards, respectively.

Six Vikings recorded a pass breakup as RJ Holliday, Logan Leonard, DeMaris Williamson, Alex Belongia, Cade Larson and Quinton Adams each knocked passes away. Jack Detert and Nolan Milius each had a quarterback hit and Nate Ratzlaff led the team with five tackles.

Grand opened the game with a seven-yard run before Hensley connected on passes of four yards twice and once for eight yards to get to the UJ 31. Kenny found three yards on the ground and Cody Oswald collected a 14-yard reception before the first incompletion of the game for Hensley. Following a false start, Hensley scampered for 11 yards before a 18-yard touchdown pass to Haynes opened the scoring with 10:36 to play in the first quarter.

The teams exchanged three-and-outs before a 6-play drive by the Jimmies ended in a punt with 4:16 to play in the quarter. The Vikings ran eight plays for 45 yards to close out the first quarter and set up a first and goal from the five yard line. Parker entered the game in the wildcat and took two snaps, toting the rock for two yards and three yards to find the end zone and double the lead at 14-0 with 14:31 to go in the half.

Jamestown put together its longest drive in response, going 41 yards in 10 plays but RJ Eckhardt stuffed the UJ run game on 4th and 4 to give the offense the ball back. Nine plays later, Parker found the end zone again, this time from a yard out, and a missed extra point chance put the Vikings up 20-0 with 5:26 left in the half.

After a UJ shanked punt, the Vikings went 29 yards down the field to get a Pecina field goal with 2:06 remaining to make it 23-0. The defense gave the offense one more shot after forcing a 3-and-out

The Viking defense gave the offense one more shot after a 3-and-out with 1:47 to play at the UJ 49. Hensley opened the drive with passes of seven yards and 16 yards to Haynes before a pass interference penalty set up AU at the UJ 13. Five plays later, Haynes found the end zone from a yard out to give the Vikings a 30-0 halftime lead.

Another Jamestown three-and-out opened the second half and the Vikings cashed in on the ensuing possession with an 11-play, 65-yard touchdown drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown run from Kenny to close the Viking scoring. The defense pitched a shutout for the first 59:33 but a 15-yard touchdown pass from the Jimmies put them on the scoreboard and rounded out the scoring.

The Vikings hit the road for the first time next week, traveling to Bismarck for a 1 p.m., kickoff at UMary on Saturday.
