Lomax's Big Night Not Enough; Women's Basketball Falls To MSUM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Despite a fourth quarter scoring spree, the Augustana women's basketball team (6-11, 3-8 NSIC) fell to MSU Moorhead (9-6, 6-5) 74-61 on Friday night at Nemzak Fieldhouse.

The Vikings were led by Miranda Lomax with 19 points. Lomax hit two 3-pointers while shooting 8 of 16 from the field on the night. Mayliah Elliott followed with nine points and three steals while each led the team with three assists apiece. Ava Pautz added eight points and Isabella Sanneh added seven points, five rebounds and four steals.

Kristen Edmonds started off the scoring for the Vikings with a 3-pointer and Sanneh added two points to give the Vikings a 5-1 start against the Dragons. After 2:39 of play, the Dragons started their 9-0 run to put them in front 10-5 with 4:50 to go in the first quarter.

The run was ended by a Lomax jumper, sparking a late quarter Viking run. After five points apiece from Lomax and Elliott helped push a 12-8 run that saw AU close the gap to one, MSUM got a basket just before the buzzer to take a 20-17 run into the second quarter.

The second quarter saw the Dragons pull away from the Vikings. Even with a pair of free throws, one from Sanneh and one from Edmonds, the Vikings fell to a 9-2 run from the Dragons. That was just the beginning for the Dragons, finishing the quarter outscoring the Vikings 25-8 to take a 45-25 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter saw much of the same from the second. The Dragons opened the scoring with a 3-pointer. Elliott followed suit with a 3-pointer for herself. After four MSUM points and a layup from Lomax, both teams went scoreless for 3:39 of play. The scoring drought was brought to an end with a converted and-one from Lomax. After a low scoring quarter, the Dragons led 60-35.

The final quarter saw a 26-14 advantage from the Vikings to bring the game to its final score. After some back and forth basketball, the Vikings ended the quarter on a 17-4 run led by Pautz and Lomax along with a pair of three's from Greta Dillinger.

Augustana returns to the court on Saturday afternoon, taking on Minnesota Crookston at 3:30 p.m.
