Sam Rensch collected a steal and a layup with 11 seconds left, capping a 14-4 run as the Augustana men's basketball team knocked off Bemidji State, 69-67, on Friday night in the Elmen Center.
Neither team got much going offensively as the Vikings (13-7, 11-4 NSIC) shot 22 of 53 from the field while BSU (6-14, 3-12 NSIC) shot 25 of 62 from the field. AU hit nine 3-pointers compared to three from the Beavers and outscored them 12-4 off turnovers.Â
Tameron Ferguson scored 20+ points for the sixth consecutive game, going for 26 points on 8 of 14 shooting, 3 of 6 from deep and 7 of 7 from the free throw line. He also added four rebounds, three assists and a steal.Â
Rensch had 17 points and two steals while
Caden Hinker had 14 points.
Tanner Te Slaa added 10 points, including two 3-pointers as the Vikings moved to 8-1 in games when Te Slaa hits at least two 3-pointers.Â
After the Beavers scored the first four points, Te Slaa struck from deep to get the Vikings on the board. That started a 9-0 Viking run as four Ferguson points and a Rensch layup put the Vikings in front 9-4 at the 15:48 mark in the first half.Â
BSU ended the run with a jumper and the teams went back-and-forth from there until an 18-18 tie at the 8:32 mark. Rensch regained the lead with a 3-pointer and, after three scoreless minutes, Ferguson knocked one down of his own to give AU a 24-18 lead.Â
Hinker hit a 3-pointer after a BSU three to make it 27-21 with 4:06 to play in the half. The Beavers went on to outscore the Vikings 10-4 the rest of the way to even the score at 31-31 at the break. Ferguson led the Vikings with 12 points and Hinker added nine points to fuel the offense.Â
After BSU took a one-point lead early in the second half but Rensch scored four straight points to give AU a 39-36 lead. The Beavers got back within a point before Te Slaa's 3-pointer brought the lead to 44-40 with 13:22 remaining.Â
There wouldn't be another lead of more than four until the 5:53 mark when BSU capped a 7-0 run to lead 57-51. After four straight Ferguson free throws got the Vikings within two points, The Beavers scored six straight points for their largest lead of the night at 63-55 with 3:35 to go.Â
Te Slaa started the comeback at 3:18 with a pair of free throws. Rensch quickly added two more with a steal and dunk to force a Beaver timeout. After forcing a shot clock violation, Hinker knocked down a 3-pointer to bring AU within a point at 63-62 with 2:07 left.Â
The Beavers hit two free throws to get their lead to three but Ferguson got an and-one on the next possession to tie the game. The Vikings got a stop and a loose ball foul, sending Hinker to the line where he knocked down a pair with 1:04 to go.Â
The Beavers hit two free throws of their own to tie the game with 40 seconds left. They had their chance to win after forcing an AU miss, calling a time out with the ball with 15 seconds to go.Â
On the inbound, Rensch got the steal and finished on the other end for the lead. On the final BSU possession,
Brady Helgren locked up the Beavers and forced a miss at the buzzer to bring the game to its final score.Â
The Vikings close the weekend on Saturday afternoon, hosting Minnesota Duluth at 5:30 p.m., inside the Elmen Center.
