MESA, Colo. - The Augustana baseball team closed its weekend series with Colorado Mesa on Saturday afternoon, falling 15-8. The Mavericks scored two runs in the seventh inning and 13 runs in the eighth inning to finish their sweep.
Six Vikings had multi-hit games, led by three hits from
Cal Schmelzle.
Brandon Weigel,
Troy Berg,
Ragan Pinnow,
Jake Lundquist and
Bjorn Lind added two hits apiece as the Vikings had 15 as a team.
Ashton Michek shoved in his first start since opening day, allowing just two hits and striking out three in five innings of work.
Drew Ball allowed a pair of runs in 1 1/3 innings before
Maddox Foss, Schmelzle,
Jack Sutton and
Joel Van De Stroet combined to finish the game.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Vikings opened the scoring in the first inning. A Schmelzle single and CMU error would bring in
Carter Heinsch, a Berg single and CMU error scored Schmelzle and a Lundquist double brought home Berg to give them a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Berg added another run with a home run in the third inning. The Vikings recorded RBI singles in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to grow the lead to 8-0, with Pinnow, Schmelzle and
Kobe Eikmeier each recording one. That would end the scoring for the Vikings as the Mavericks mounted their comeback over their final two at bats to bring the game to its final score.
The Vikings will return to action March 6-8 with a four-game set at Drury.
