Viking Softball Falls to Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. – Augustana dropped a pair of conference contests on Tuesday afternoon inside the Wildcat Dome, falling 6-3 in the opener before a 9-0 setback in five innings to Wayne State.

Wayne State 6, Augustana 3
Sidney Smart powered the Augustana offense with a two-home run performance while Andrea Cain also went deep, but a five-run first inning by Wayne State proved too much to overcome in game one.

Wayne State struck quickly in the bottom of the first, stringing together five hits including a three-run home run to take a 5-0 lead before the Vikings could record an out.

Augustana answered in the second inning as Smart launched her first home run of the game to put the Vikings on the board and cut the deficit to 5-1.

The Wildcats added a run in the second inning to push the lead to 6-1, but Teya Speltz settled in out of the bullpen, tossing 5.2 innings while allowing just one run and striking out four.

Smart continued her big day in the fifth inning, blasting her second solo home run to trim the score to 6-2.

In the sixth, Cain added another spark with a solo home run to left center, bringing Augustana within three at 6-3.

The Vikings threatened in the seventh with a pair of baserunners, but Wayne State was able to close the door and secure the 6-3 win.

Wayne State 9, Augustana 0 (5 Innings)
Wayne State carried its momentum into game two, scoring five runs in the opening inning before it secured a 9-0 victory.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with a solo home run before adding a two-run single and a three-run homer later in the frame to take an early 5-0 lead.

Augustana had limited opportunities offensively, drawing five walks but unable to record a hit against Wayne State pitching.

Wayne State added to its lead in the fourth inning with four runs, including another home run and a sacrifice fly, extending the advantage to 9-0.

The Vikings were unable to generate a rally in the fifth, as the game ended via run rule.
