SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In a four-set win Saturday night, Augustana volleyball beat Winona State 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-14). The Vikings posted a .266 hitting percentage with 57 kills, while limiting WSU to 36 kills and a .126 hitting mark. The win was also highlighted by
Maya Wente, who reached her 1,000th career kill.
After the teams reached 3-3 in the opening set, Augustana moved ahead 8-4 behind kills from
Kelby Opland,
Maya Wente and
Lucy Belisle. WSU trimmed the margin to 8-7, but the Vikings rebuilt the advantage to 16-11 with kills from Belisle, Wente,
Sydney Tims and
Reagan Jansen, plus a
Kiylah Franke service ace. Augustana still led 20-18 after Belisle's kill, but the Warriors tied the set at 20-20 on an Abby Ongna ace and moved in front 21-20 on an Augustana attack error. After Augustana tied it at 21-21, Maddie Brown had back-to-back kills, and Hailee Peters added another for set point, and Brown finished the set for WSU, 25-23, after Augustana had pulled within one.
Augustana erased an early 2-0 deficit with four straight points, getting kills from Opland and
Abby Gruber before moving ahead 4-2 on a WSU attack error. The Warriors pulled within 12-11, but Opland's sideout kill started a 9-0 Augustana run, with
Alexis Nelson serving the final eight points of the surge as Opland, Jansen and Gruber added kills. Gruber and Jansen helped push the set to 23-12, and after WSU closed back to 24-17, Wente's block on an attack error finished the set at 25-17.
The Warriors built an early 7-2 lead behind Hailee Peters' serve and later moved ahead 11-5 before Augustana began working back with kills from Jansen and Tims and a
Julia Blom service ace to reach 14-10. Franke then served a six-point Augustana run, with Gruber's kill, two WSU attack errors, Franke's kill, and Belisle's kill turning the set into a 16-14 Augustana lead. After Augustana stretched the margin to 20-16, WSU closed to 20-19, but Jansen, Tims and Wente answered with kills around a WSU setting error to bring up set point at 24-19. The Warriors fought off set point before Wente finished the set with a kill, giving Augustana a 25-20 win.
Augustana built an early 6-1 lead in the fourth set as Jansen served through a stretch that included kills by Franke and Belisle and a service ace. WSU worked back to 8-7 and later got within 13-10 on a Zoe Haan kill, but a service error returned the point to Augustana and started an 8-0 run.
Clara Hoegh then served seven straight Augustana points, with the run including an ace, two Wente kills, and a Jansen kill as the lead reached 21-10. Augustana stayed in front from there, with kills by Tims and Gruber helping bring set point before an Abby Ongna attack error closed the set at 25-14.
