WINONA, Minn. — The Vikings defeated Winona State 2-1 on Sunday.
Avery Heinz scored off
Delaney Awe's assist in the 76th minute to put the Vikings ahead after the match was tied 1-1 for much of the game.
Heinz scored the game-winning goal, finishing with two shots and one on goal.
Madelyn White also scored, led the Vikings with three shots and put two attempts on frame. Awe recorded an assist and added one shot.
Linnea Larson played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
The Vikings generated the first shot of the first half when
Laina Souerdyke put an attempt on frame in the 1st minute, and Larson later saved Kyleigh Jannisch's shot in the 6th minute. The Warriors took the lead in the 11th minute when Faith Quinn scored on an assist from Jannisch, but White scored for the Vikings in the 22nd minute to make it 1-1. After a stretch with three Vikings fouls,
Makenzie Nelson forced a save in the 32nd minute, and
Leah Gschwendtner put a late shot high before the Vikings earned a corner in the 44th minute as the first half ended tied 1-1.
The Vikings generated the first chances of the second half, with Heinz missing left in the 47th minute before White, Gschwendtner, and
Anabel Hillstrom took four shots from the 57th to the 60th minute, including saves by Abigail Rounds on White and Gschwendtner.
Nyla Tharp and Awe each put later attempts wide left, and Heinz scored from Awe's assist in the 76th minute to put the Vikings ahead 2-1. The Warriors put Madison Barnick's shot on frame 18 seconds later, but Larson made the save, and the Vikings got through a closing stretch that included three fouls and a yellow card to Samantha Perez to finish the 2-1 win.
