Strength and Conditioning: Speed

Speed

Speed is a major focus of the Viking Strength and Conditioning Program. As an athlete at Augustana University, you can become faster.

We focus on developing speed by improving stride frequency, stride length, running form and speed endurance. Stride length is improved through resistive running or training.

Stair sprints and parachute sprinting are utilized in our winter and summer programs as well as resistance exercises done in the weight room throughout the program.

Running form is improved through the use of our speed gate routine. Speed gates are a series of running movements that develop neuromuscular movement patterns. The movements are learned at slow speeds and transferred to high speeds. Again, this is a major focus during our winter conditioning program and over the summer.

Finally, speed endurance is developed by performing near maximal sprints with various sport specific recovery intervals. The summer and winter programs develop speed endurance through our sprint training.
