Following a major gift from Lee Goldammer, the Augustana baseball team recently announced plans to renovate and upgrade Ronken Field. Head coach Tim Huber is leading the charge during this exciting time as the team is kicking off a fundraising campaign to take the project to the next level.
"This lead gift is a jump start for us to be able to do something very special here. I have a dream and vision that would help take our facility to among the top in the conference, region and potentially the country at the Division II level. We have a great start with Goldy's gift and a few other committed gifts already. Following this spring season, we will make major improvements to our baseball field. The planned improvements will help attract top recruits that are considering Augustana. This should help the program take a step toward competing for a conference championship every year and the goal of making the regional tournament an annual event. Ronken Field will become the same type of proud facility as Kirkeby-Over Stadium (which sits behind the left field fence).
Planned renovations include a new artificial turf surface on the infield that will run from dugout to dugout. This will be the only of its kind in the conference and South Dakota. The dugouts will be torn down and bigger, better versions will be constructed. A new net system will be installed behind home plate, increasing the fan experience, along with a brick wall from dugout to dugout.
Those improvements will be followed with a grand stand behind home plate, connected with a press box and suite built above the seating. The enclosed suite and press box will serve as a natural covering for the grandstand and provide fans cover from poor weather. Additional plans also call for a larger, uncovered seating area behind the first base dugout along with bathrooms and concessions. Also included in the design will be a plaza between the grandstand and seats down the first-base line. A deck between the third-base dugout and grandstand will add another unique viewing area.
