Augustana University Athletics

Brian Hermanson

Veteran coach Brian Hermanson joined the Augustana staff in the fall of 2017, and brings with him more than 35 years of coaching experience at the high school, college and professional level.

Hermanson spent most of his 36-year career as an assistant, but he definitely made his mark during an eight-year stint as the head coach at Washington High School, where he coached the Warriors from 2005-12, guiding them to an 82-16 record and six trips to the state Class 11AA championship games - winning the state title in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and finishing second in 2007, 2008 and 2011.

The Warriors also won Greater Dakota Conference titles in 2009, 2010 and 2012. During his eight years as head coach at Washington, his alma mater, 51 Warrior student-athletes went on to play college football, a number at the NCAA Division I level.

Hermanson’s coaching career began in 1981 at Brookings High School, where he spent one year as an assistant, and includes stops at Whittier Junior High in Sioux Falls and two separate stints at both Washington and Roosevelt High Schools. He also worked at Augustana in 2001 and at the University of Sioux Falls in 2016. He also spent the last five years in the Indoor Football League with the Sioux Falls Storm.

In addition to his numerous high school coach of the year awards, Hermanson coached in four South Dakota All-Star games, and received the Ralph Ginn Award from South Dakota State University in 2013. Three years later, he gained induction into the South Dakota Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

Hermanson and his wife, Mary, live in Sioux Falls.
