Matt McPhie, a former Augustana wide receiver, enters his third season as an assistant coach with the Viking football program in 2016. McPhie will coach the wide receivers for the second straight season. He coached running backs in 2014.

Under McPhie’s watch, Charlie Hayes and Matt Heller went on to earn All-NSIC and All-Region honors following the 2015 season. Hayes was later named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-America Honorable Mention team. Hayes and Heller both went over 1,000 receiving yards last season, led by Hayes who hauled in 12 touchdown passes while ranking second in the NSIC with 1,127 receiving yards.

Heller caught 53 passes for 1,089 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 20.5 yards per catch and 90.8 receiving yards per game. Augustana set single season records for total offense (5,527 yards), passing yards (3,603), points scored (494) and touchdowns (64) in 2015.

McPhie led a dynamic duo of backs in 2014 in senior Dajon Newell and junior CJ Ham. Newell and Ham combined for 1,513 rushing yards, 14 rushing touchdowns and five receiving touchdowns last season.

McPhie is no stranger to Augustana, having played two seasons as a wide receiver for the Vikings (1995-96) and coaching wide receivers and tight ends in 1997-98. He was a first team All-NCC selection in 1995 and earned Don Hansen Football Gazette All-America Honorable Mention honors in 1996.

In his first season with the Vikings, he led the team with 62 receptions, 779 receiving yards and six touchdowns in nine games. As a senior, McPhie hauled in 67 passes for 820 yards and 10 touchdowns on his way to earning All-America honors in 1996.

As a coach at Augustana, McPhie tutored two All-America honorees in Chad Gomarko and Matt Holmlund. Holmlund is the career record holder at Augustana in catches (282), receiving yards (3,522) and touchdowns (35). Gomarko was a 1,000-yard receiver in 1997, finishing the year with 78 catches for 1,037 yards and eight touchdowns.

McPhie was an All-State receiver out of Oakmont High School in Roseville, Calif. before spending two seasons at American River College in Sacramento, Calif., where he was an all-conference receiver in 1994.

McPhie earned his bachelor's degree in communications and physical education from Augustana in 2014.

McPhie resides in Sioux Falls with his wife Tricia and their three children, Ashley, Baer and T-Bone.
