Chad Hettermann is in his seventh season on the men’s basketball staff at Augustana, his fifth as a full-time assistant in 2017-18. Hettermann, a 2011 graduate of Augustana, played four seasons for the Vikings before spending two years as a graduate assistant.
Hettermann also leads the men’s basketball player development program at Augustana.
He has been a part of Augustana’s last eight NCAA Tournament appearances, three as a player and five as an assistant coach. Hettermann has also been a member of 10 straight winning seasons as a player and a coach.
Coming off of a program record 34 wins in 2015-16 that included the first men’s basketball national title in school history, the Vikings went 24-9 advancing to the NCAA Central Region Tournament semifinals for the third straight year in 2016-17.
Over the last three seasons, Hettermann has helped lead the Vikings to two straight NSIC Championships and an overall record of 89-14.
Four players earned All-NSIC honors in 2015-16, including first team selections Daniel Jansen, Casey Schilling and Alex Richter. Jordan Spencer, who set the single season assist record at Augustana in 2015-16, was named All-NSIC Second Team. Jansen and Schilling earned player of the year honors from the NSIC for the second straight season. Jansen was named the NSIC’s Player of the Year and Schilling earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Jansen went on to be named the Central Region Player of the Year for the second straight season and eventually the NABC National Player of the Year. Jansen and Schilling finished their careers at Augustana as the top two scorers in program history, the first two players to score over 2,000 career points. Jansen owns the all-time record with 2,255 career points while Schilling finished his career ranked second with 2,054.
Richter emerged as the Most Outstanding Player of the Elite Eight in Frisco, Texas during the team’s national championship run. Richter averaged 24.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting 58 percent from the field and 71 percent from 3-point range. He scored 32 points in the quarterfinal win over Tarleton State and led the Vikings with 26 points in the national title game against Lincoln Memorial.
In 2014-15, Augustana the team won its first-ever Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season championship before the Vikings went on to win its first-ever postseason tournament winning the NSIC Tournament. Augustana hosted the NCAA Central Region Tournament for the first time in program history.
Hettermann helped guide Augustana to a school record 31 wins (31-3) in 2014-15, which included a program record 19-game winning streak. The Vikings has the second-best winning percentage of all teams in NCAA Division II (91.2 percent) in 2014-15 and were one of just 18 teams across all divisions with 30-plus wins.
Augustana set numerous single season records in 2014-15, including most points (2,955), field goals made (1,016), 3-point field goals made (313), 3-point field goals attempted (754), free throws made (610), free throws attempted (814) and rebounds (1,292). Daniel Jansen also set the individual single season scoring record in 2014-15 scoring 671 points.
A native of Johnsburg, Ill., Hettermann closed his tenure as a player at Augustana in 2010-11 and left as one of the winningest players in program history. During his five years on the roster, the Vikings compiled a record of 101-47 while making two Sweet 16 appearances.
Hettermann, regarded as a staunch defender, appeared in 116 career games and made 37 starts. He also scored 225 points, grabbed 187 rebounds, dished out 155 assists and made 97 steals.
Hettermann graduated from Johnsburg High School in 2006 and earned bachelor's degrees in sports management and business administration from Augustana in 2011.
He earned his master's in sports administration and leadership from Augustana in 2014.
Hettermann resides in Harrisburg with his wife, Kimberly, and son, Kempton.
