Nat Wagner came to Augustana as assistant softball coach in 2017.
Wagner helped guide Augustana to an NCAA Tournament appearance in his first season in 2017. The Vikings finished 40-16 in 2017, including 21-5 in NSIC play, good for a third-place finish in the final league standings. Augustana made its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the last eight seasons in 2017, advancing to the Central Region 2 Tournament title game.
Augustana batted .337 as a team in 2017, the fifth highest mark in a single season and stole 83 bases, the second most in a single season. Â

Wagner brings an extensive coaching background with him to Augustana after spending the 2015 and 2016 seasons as an assistant coach at Valley City State University. During Wagner’s tenure as an assistant coach at Valley City State, the Vikings went 64-35 over two seasons, including a 40-13 record in 2016.

Wagner served as the lead recruiting coordinator at Valley City State and corresponded with all incoming recruits and coordinated visits. He also assisted in leading youth clinics and fundraising for the VCSU softball program.

Prior to joining the staff at VCSU, Wagner spent two seasons as the head coach at New Prague High Scholl in Minnesota where he was the conference and section coach of the year following the 2014 season. He led New Prague to the school’s first conference and state championships in softball in school history.

Wagner began his coaching career in 1997 as the head coach at Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine. He returned to Minnesota in 2006 as the head coach at The Blake School where he led his team to a conference title. He then coached at Hopkins High School leading the Royals to consecutive conference and section titles and two state tournament appearances.

He got his start in college softball at the University of St. Thomas where he coached under John Tschida helping the Tommies to a conference championship.

Wagner earned his bachelor’s degree from Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota in Latin and owns three master’s degrees, two in English and one in classical languages.Â
Wagner and his wife, Christy, are the parents of three children; Sammy, Tommy and Claire.
