Brian Gerry

Brian Gerry currently serves Augustana as the head athletic trainer for the athletic department and as
the head athletic trainer for the football team. He also serves as the Athletics Health Care Administrator
and volunteer’s his time as a clinical preceptor within the CAATE accredited Masters of Science in
Athletic Training (MSAT) education program.

Gerry began his association with Augustana in May of 1993, where he held a joint role with Sioux Valley
Hospital. In this joint appointment, he served the college as an adjunct instructor within the HPER
department and as a clinical advisor to the athletic training department. He was appointed as the
coordinator of the athletic training program for the hospital, where he developed the hospital’s sports
medicine outreach program.

In 1996, Gerry was asked to lead and develop the athletic training department for the college. In this
role he served as the program director of the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP), where he
developed the curriculum, taught the majority of the courses and eventually got the athletic training
academic program CAAHEP and CAATE accredited. He did this in conjunction while serving as the head
athletic trainer for the athletic department as well as the head athletic trainer for the football team,
while continuing his duties as the coordinator of the athletic training program for the hospital.

During his 8-year tenure (1993-2001) as a joint employee with the college and the hospital, he
developed the Sports 1 Outreach program for the hospital (now Sanford Health) where he secured
numerous athletic training service contracts with local high schools and semi-professional teams and
developed the Summer Strength and Conditioning program, the Sports 1 Celebrity Football Camp and
the Summer Jam Basketball League. He also served as a clinical instructor for the Sioux Falls Center for
Family Medicine Residency program, where he jointly developed the SCORE course (Sports Coverage
Orientation for Residents Education) with Dr. Wesley Nord. In 1997 he was recognized as their Clinical
Teacher of the Year, marking the first and only time this award was given to a non-physician.

Gerry became an exclusive employee of Augustana in 2001, where he held the titles of program
director, clinical coordinator and assistant professor, while also serving as the head athletic trainer for
the athletic department and the football team. In 2015, he stepped down from his full-time academic
duties to make way for new leadership to transition the CAATE accredited athletic training program
from a bachelor’s to a master’s academic program.

From 1987-93, Gerry served as the head athletic trainer for Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Prior to that
he was a graduate student at Indiana State University, where he gained valuable clinical experience with
the Indianapolis Colts (1986) and Rose -Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, IN from 1985-87.
Gerry has also served the SDHSAA as a certified basketball official for the past 25 years. He has worked
numerous state basketball tournaments and was recently recognized as the 2025-26 SDHSAA Girls’
Basketball Official of the Year. He also proudly served six years as a staff sergeant in the Air National
Guard (four years with South Dakota and two years with the Indiana national guard bases) from 1981-
87.

As a Sioux Falls native, Gerry graduated from Washington High School in 1980 and then went to
Southwest State University in Marshall, MN where he played football and baseball for the Mustangs,
graduating in 1985 with a dual degree in Health Education and Physical Education.

Brian and his wife Kelli are the proud parents of three children (Jennifer, Matthew and Nathan) and have
five grandchildren.
