Ben Goodwin claimed the 197 pound Super Region 3 individual championship this past weekend in Moorhead, Minn. Goodwin went into the tournament as the No. 7 seed and went on to defeat the top-three seeds to claim the title. Goodwin defeated second seeded Joe Gomez of Northern State, the reigning national runner-up at 197 pounds, by a 8-6 decision in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Goodwin scored a last second takedown against No. 3 seed Vince Dietz of St. Cloud State to win a 2-1 decision. In the finals, Goodwin used some more late magic to record a last second reversal over top seeded Ethan Sheretz of Maryville to win by a 5-4 decision. Goodwin qualified for the national tournament for the first time in his career.
