Nate Buys captured the 184-pound title to highlight a strong showing by the Augustana wrestling team at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. Saturday.
Buys went 4-0 on the day. He recorded a 9-0 major decision over John Justice of Dana in his first match before picking up a 17-0 technical fall over North Dakota State's Andrew Haataja. In the semifinals Buys defeated Dallas Mitchell 4-0 before edging Tyler Sorenson 5-4 in the finals.
The Vikings, ranked No. 4 in the NWCA Division II Preseason Top 20 Poll, had four wrestlers place third in their respective weight classes. At 133 pounds,
Mike Long placed third by defeating Brett Brandl 10-2.
Matt McDougall placed third at 157 pounds by pinning David Hildreth of Iowa Central Community College in 1:59. At 165 pounds,
Cody Henriksen decisioned Michael Quamme of North Dakota State 7-3. Heavyweight
Cris Bietz defeated teammate
Ray O'Conner 3-0 in the third place match.
In the 125-pound fifth place match,
Chris Trampe defeated teammate
Adam Schlee 1-0.
