Augustana College wrestler
Aaron Graumann was named the male recipient of the 2005 Stan
Marshall Award as part of the NCC Honors Dinner at Arrowwood Resort in Okoboji, Iowa, Monday night.
The award is given annually to one male and one female senior student-athlete who distinguish themselves through academic performance, athletic ability and community activities. Heather Hamilton of Minnesota-Duluth was named the women's recipient.
Graumann, a Sioux Falls native, capped a stellar career with a remarkable senior season. He posted a 35-4 record at 125 pounds and won the NCAA Division II national championship while leading the Vikings to a second-place team finish. He was a four-time national qualifier and a three-time All-American.
In the classroom, Graumann maintains a 3.78 grade point average while majoring in chemistry and Spanish. He was a three-time Academic All-North Central Conference selection and was a 2003-04 CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Third Team honoree.
Graumann is also involved in numerous campus and community activities. The 2004 Viking Days Homecoming King, Graumann is active in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Spanish Club and the Student Affiliate American Chemical Society. In addition, he has volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and Mark Twain Elementary School.
Earlier this month, Graumann was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Graumann is the fifth Augustana male student-athlete to win the award. The last Augustana
representative was
Bryan Schwartz in 1995 and Graumann is the first Augustana wrestler to win the award since
Jon Lundberg in the awards’ inaugural year of 1982.
The award is named in memory of longtime South Dakota State athletic director Stan Marshall, who passed away in 1980. Marshall was a leader at the conference and national levels of intercollegiate athletics.
The recipients of the Stan Marshall Award are selected by the league’s institutional representatives from the NCC Honor Athletes announced earlier this month. Each school selects one male and one female student-athlete for
the Honor Athlete recognition.
