Box ScoreAugustana used balanced scoring and a strong defensive effort to win its seventh-straight game, defeating Alaska-Fairbanks 82-58 Friday night at Patty Gymnasium in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The Vikings (8-1) shot 57 percent from the field for the game while holding the host Nanooks to just 32 percent shooting.
The first half was very tight as neither team led by more than 5 points until the end of the half when
Matt Paulson scored just before the buzzer to give Augustana a 40-33 halftime lead.
Augie grabbed control of the game early in the second half. The Vikings scored the first 10 points during the first 4 minuts of the half to open a 50-33 lead. Following a UAF 3-pointer, the Vikings reeled off 7 unanswerd points during a 10-2 to take a 21-point lead at 62-41 with just under 11 minutes to play in the game.
The closest Alaska-Fairbanks would get the rest of the way was 15 points.
Augustana capitalized on its defense, rebounding and depth. The Vikings limited UAF to just 8 field goals in the second half. On the glass, the Vikings outrebounded the Nanooks by a 39-32 count. UAF entered the game outrebounding its opponents by 10 boards per game. In addition, Augie's bench outscored Alaska-Fairbanks 32-13.
Four players scored in double figures for the Vikings.
Joey Ryan and
Tom VerDouw eached scored 14 points, while
Nick Olson poured in 12 and
Eric Krogman tossed in 10. Paulson and
Marques Blank added 9 points apiece.
Augustana concludes its trip to Alaska on Saturday when the Vikings take on Alaska-Anchorage in an 8 p.m. CST contest.
