Viking Tracksters Crown Three Champions on Day 1 of NCC Indoor Championships

Augustana crowned three champions and had several other individuals put themselves in position to do the same on Saturday at the 2006 North Central Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Mankato, Minn.

In the team standings, the Viking women are in second place with 46 points. Augustana trails South Dakota, which is in first place with 52 points. On the men's side, Augustana is in fifth place with 17 points. Host Minnesota State-Mankato has 67 points to hold down first place.

Rachel Stangler and Luke Baltrusch swept the 5,000 meter races. Stangler won the women's race in 17:30.53, which is a national provisional qualifying mark. Likewise, Baltrusch turned in a provisional qualifying time while winning the men's race in 14:51.71.

Augustana's other individual champion on Day 1 was Janie Sershen who won the pentathlon with 3,329 points. On the track, she had times of 2:24.39 in the 800 and 9.38 in the 60-meter hurdles. She then turned in marks of 5-02.25 in the high jump, 16-03.75 in the long jump and 29-09.25 in the shot put.

Both distance medley relay teams finished third. The Viking women turned in a season-best time of 10:38.79, while the women's team crossed the finish line in 12:34.21.

Augustana's men's other point was scored by Robert Ihry, who finished eighth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:38.30.

Two Viking women earned second-place finishes. Becky Schulz matched her season-best mark by clearing 5-07.25, which is a provisional national qualifying mark. Shelby Eykyn was second in the long jump with a season-best jump of 18-01.75. The mark is a provisional national qualifying standard.

Jenny Anderson rounded out the Viking scorers on Friday with a fifth-place finish in the pentathlon. She totaled 3,129 points.

Eykyn and Anderson also excelled on the track, qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles. Eykyn qualified first with a provisional national qualifying time of 8.83 seconds. Anderson, meanwhile, qualified eighth in 9.43.

Three other Viking women qualfied for Saturday's finals. Mary Stoll qualified third in the 800 meters in 2:18.48, while Kelly Fernandez had the fifth-best time in the 1,000 meters with a mark of 3:01.60. Kristy Reagles qualified sixth in the 500 meters in 1:19.08.

For the men, Luke Guetter, the defending NCC champion in the 400 meteres, turned in the top qualifying time at 50.23. In addition, Chad Backsen qualified fourth in the 1,000 meters in 2:38.86.
