Behind three fourth-place finishers and a fifth-place finisher, the Augustana College wrestling team placed sixth at the 2006 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Findlay, Ohio.
The Vikings finished in seventh place in the team standings with 60 points after Pittsburgh-Johnstown leap-frogged Augustana in the finals. It is the Vikings' third-straight top 10 finish in head coach
Jason Reitmeier's three-year helm.
Nebraska-Omaha, behind three individual champions, won its third-straight team title with 117 points. Nebraska-Kearney was second (98.5), followed by Shippensburg (66.5), Central Oklahoma (64.5) and Minnesota State-Mankato (63.5) to round out the top five.
Augustana had two wrestlers alive in the semifinals to start Day 2, but
Ryan King and Tim Boldt each lost their semifinal matches. King, the top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, dropped a 6-2 decision to Findlay's Antonio Guerra. King had been 2-0 against Guerra, including an overtime win this season at the Division II national duals.
King trailed 3-2 late in the third period when Guerra scored a takedown with 41 seconds left to take a 5-2 lead. He added a riding time point for the four-point win.
Boldt then fell 5-4 to Corey Jacoby of Shippensburg. In a rematch of last year's national title match, Jacoby used a takedown with 7 seconds left in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. He then scored an escape in the second period to lead 3-0.
Boldt added an escape early in the third period and nearly tied the bout with takedown with 59 seconds left. However, the wrestlers were ruled out of bounds.
Jacoby then got another takedown seconds later to increase his lead to 5-1. Boldt received two stalling points and an escape in the final seconds of the match to account for the final score.
King then lost 10-6 to Mikel Delk of Fort Hays State in the consolation semifinals, sending him to the fifth-place match. In the fifth-place match, King scored a 3-1 victory over Central Oklahoma's Shea Timothy.
Boldt bounced back in the consolation semifinals with an 8-4 win over John Goral of Wisconsin-Parkside before losing to Nebraska-Kearney's Jeff Sylvester 11-3 in the third-place match.
Also placing fourth were
Austin Scarset at 157 pounds and
Cody Henriksen at 165 pounds. Both wrestlers lost first-round matches and proceeded to win four matches to reach the third-place match. Scarset dropped a hard-fought 10-8 sudden victory decsion to No. 1 Patrick Alibone of Nebraska-Omaha to finish fourth.
Scarset scored three takedowns in the first period to lead 6-3. Alibone rallied to tie the score 6-6 early in the third period, but Scarset got a takedown with 1:34 remaining. Alibone escaped at 1:21 to make the score 8-7 in Scarset's favor. Scarset appeared to be on his way to the dramatic win when, with less than 10 seconds on the clock, Scarset was called for fleeing the mat, which awarded a point to Alibone and tied the bout 8-8.
The match then went to a 1 minute sudden victory period. With 4 seconds left in the period, Alibone scored the winning takedown.
Earlier in the day, Scarset defeated Stephen Humphrey of Carson-Newman 7-1 and Scott Cleve of Adams State 8-6 to reach the third-place match.
Henriksen experienced similar disappointment in the third-place match as he lost a 5-4 decision to UNO's Ross Taplin in a bout that was decided on riding time advantage following the second tiebreak session.
The match was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. After a scoreless sudden victory period, each wrestler scored escapes in the first tiebreaks. Following a second scoreless sudden victory period, they went to a second set of tiebreaks, in which each wreslter is given 30 seconds in the down position.
Each wrestler scored an escape, but Taplin had a 13-second advantage in riding time, giving him the win.
Nate Buys capped his season on a strong note by finishing seventh at 184 pounds. He was pinned by Shippensburg's Mark Murphy in the third round of consolations, but in the seventh-place match, Buys pinned Nathan Jones with 3 seconds left in the second period. The match was tied 2-2 when Buys took down Jones to his back with 32 seconds left in the period.
Augustana's final placer was heavyweight
Cris Bietz, who finished eighth. Bietz was pinned by No. 2 Jacob Lininger of Shippensburg in the consolation third round in a time of 2:29. Bietz then lost 6-3 to Jose Navarro of Indianapolis 8-3. Bietz defeated Navarro 4-2 in overtime in the first round.
Augustana's six All-Americans is one off the school record of seven which the Vikings crowned in 2005 while finishing second in the team standings.
