Approximately 75 women attended the Inaugural Augustana Women's Football Clinic Thursday night at Minnehaha Country Club.
"I think the women walked away with a greater appreciation for football," Viking head coach
Brad Salem said. "That was our goal, to help them learn more about the game. It was a fun night with a lot of things going on."
Following a tailgate party consiting of wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres, the women rotated through eight stations to learn about the various positions on the team. The stations focused on quarterbacks, running backs, strength training, offensive line, tight ends/receivers, defensive line, linebackers and defensive backs.
The Viking coaching staff, along with several players provided instruction and insight at each station, and helped the women participate in some of the drills the players use at practice.
“I had a great time and learned a lot,” said
Juli Peterson of Brandon, S.D. “My dad was a football coach so I thought I knew a lot about football, but I learned it is a lot more complex than people think. It was interesting to learn how many plays and formations they have. I also enjoyed going to the different stations and learning some of the details of each position. But what I enjoyed most was meeting the players.”
Salem said he hopes to turn this into an annual event.
"With this being the first time we've done something like this, we weren't sure what the response was going to be," Salem said. "But this was great. I think we can get over 100 women to come next year."
