Viking Grapplers Compete at Dakota Wesleyan Open

19 members of the Augustana wrestling team competed at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D. The Open ran three days, with initial and wrestleback rounds ran on Thursday and Friday, with the final eight wrestlers in each class competing on Saturday.

At 125, Sid Bice completed the meet with a 4-1 record. Bice defeated Tony Forte and Kyle Donnan of Buena Vista, Corbin Surat of Newman, and John Hagen of Northwestern on his way to a third-place finish.

At 141, Jay Sherer finished 4-1 to finish in second place. Sherer defeated Phil Bastings of the University of Regina, LJ Franzoni, Brent Lowe of Briar Cliff, Dave Schiley of Newman and lost in the championship to Jared Picket of Morningside.

At 197, Lance Peters finished in fourth place with a 4-2 record. Peters recorded victories over Karl Spain of William Penn, Scott Modder of Buena Vista, Richard Kokesh of Iowa Lakes and Bryan Irsik of York College. Ty Copsey recorded a 4-1 record. Copsey defeated Irsik, Jeremy Hjelmeland of Buena Vista, Florian Temengil of Northwestern, and Todd Naasz of Newman on his way to a second-place finish.
