Tom VerDouw Putback at the Buzzer Lifts Viking Men Past Missouri Southern State

Box Score

Tom VerDouw's fade away putback off an offensive rebound at the buzzer lifted Augustana to a 79-77 non-conference victory over Missouri Southern State Saturday night in Joplin, Mo.

Augustana improved to 6-1 on the season after winning its fifth-straight game. MSSU fell to 5-2.

The Vikings led by 3 points, 77-74, but Missouri Southern State tied the game on a 3-pointer by Skyler Bowlin with 27 seconds left in the game.

Augustana worked the final shot. As time was running down, David Foster attempted a 3-pointer from the corner. The shot was no good, but VerDouw came down with the rebound. He quickly shot the ball as he faded away from the basket. As the ball hit the backboard, the buzzer sounded, and the ball went through the net.

The entire game was close throughout as it featured 9 ties. MSSU led by 7, 60-53 with 10 minutes to play in the game, but Augustana pulled even with the Lions at 68-68 with 4:30 to play.

The Vikings later trailed 72-71, but a 3-pointer by Ian Thomas and a basket by VerDouw gave them a 76-72 lead with 2:40 on the clock.

That lead seemed safe until Bowlin's 3-pointer knotted the score at 77.

Corey McIntosh led the Vikings with a game-high and career-high 33 points. VerDouw and Foster joined him in double figures with 14 and 11 points each.

Augustana shot 54 percent from the field for the game, connecting on 32 of 59 shots.

The Vikings return home to the Elmen Center on Tuesday night when they entertain Wayne State. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
