Augie-USF Play-by-Play

Augustana flexed its muscle by winning 19 of 20 matches in dominating Dakota Wesleyan and the University of Sioux Falls in a triangular Wednesday night at USF's Stewart Center. The Vikings steamrolled past Dakota Wesleyan 47-3 before shutting out USF 46-0.

In winning 19 matches Augustana registered 6 pins, 2 technical falls, 2 major decisions and 1 injury default. The Vikings were also the beneficiaries of 3 forfeits.

Mike Long and Gavin Nelson had the most impressive nights as both earned a pin and technical fall. Long scored a 19-3 technical fall over DWU's Jacob Sathe before he pinned USF's Jake Cawthorne in 6:37. Nelson, meanwhile, pinned Danny Hutcheson of Dakota Wesleyan in 1:43 before blanking Eric Engberg 15-0.

Also picking up pins were Al Meger, Matt Morris, Andrew Sorenson and Beau Severtson. Severtson recorded the fastest pin, sticking DWU's Blake Hodne in just 52 seconds.

The most dramatic match of the night was the 285-pound bout between Augustana's Lance Peters and USF's Justin Kyte. Kyte had a significant size and weight advantage, but Peters held his own. After a scoreless first period, Peters chose the neutral position to start the second period. Again there was no scoring, but Kyte was called for stalling. Kyte then chose the down position to start the third. However, Peters would not let Kyte get away. Peters earned 1 point when Kyte was called a second time for stalling. He then earned a riding time point for the 2-0 victory.

The night did have a scary moment. In the 197-pound match between Augustana's Ty Copsey and USF Chris Mckinney, Copsey was leading 5-0 in the second period. Copsey was trying to get another takedown but the wrestlers' momentum took them to the edge of the mat and they ended up crashing into the scorer's table. Mckinney was shaken up on the play and could not continue.

Augustana will be in action again on Sunday when the Vikings travel to Fayette, Iowa, to face Upper Iowa.
