Augustana's Ty Copsey successfully defended his 197-pound title with a perfect 4-0 record at the Warren Williamson Daktronics Open Saturday in Brookings, S.D.

Copsey, who is ranked fourth in the nation in Division II, pinned Luke Stika in 1:24 in his opening match before scoring a 17-1 major decision over Todd Casselman in a second-round bout. In the semfinals, Copsey edged Phil Hawes 3-2 before defeating Joe Johnson of Iowa Central 3-1 in the finals.

Copsey's performance highlighted a strong showing by the Vikings in their first action of the 2008-09 season.

At 285 pounds, Lance Peters, last year's runner-up, earned a third-place finish with a 3-1 record. After receiving a first-round bye, Peters pinned Carlos Rohena of Iowa Central in 2:16 before edging Matt Meuleners 3-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Peters lost 13-0 to Tucker Lane. Peters then bounced back with a 3-2 over Jason Stripling in the third-place match.

Four other Vikings placed in their respective weight classes. Two wrestlers finished fourth. At 149 pounds, Jarred McCarthy pinned Tyler Stark in 45 seconds and Ethan Kahrs in 2:59 to advance to the quarterfinals. He then defeated Danny Hutcheson 7-1 to move on to the semifinals. However, he dropped a 24-8 major decision to Esai Dominguez of Nebraska-Omaha to fall into the third-place match. There, he lost to Tanner Kampen 10-4 to finish the day with a 3-2 record.

At 174 pounds, Casey Mouw went 2-2 to finish in fourth place. He defeated Clarence Jordan 18-8 in the second round following a first-round bye before blanking Blake Hodne 7-0 to advance to the semifinals. Mouw was then pinned by Donnie Bowden and lost 6-1 to Cameron Schrempp in the third-place match.

At 125 pounds, Sid Bice received a first-round bye before dropping a 9-7 decision to Kenny Anderson of Iowa Central. Bice then reeled off three wins to reach the consolation semifinals. However, the rest of the action at that weight was cancelled, leaving Bice tied for fifth place.

Finally, Brandon Kruger went 2-2 and finished in seventh place at 157 pounds. After a first-round bye, Kruger edged Sean Flynn 6-4 before losing to Nathan Sigman of Nebraska-Omaha 10-3. In the consolation bracket, Kruger downed Tanner LaValliere 7-3 before he fell to Carl Serck 9-3, dropping him into the seventh-place match, which was cancelled.

Augustana will be in action again next week at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D.
