Despite having a small group of participants, the Augustana men's and women's indoor track and field teams turned in strong performances at the MSU Open and Pentathlon Saturday in Mankato, Minn.
With a large number of the squad members on break before the start of the spring semester next week, the Vikings sent just 16 athletes to the meet. In all the Vikings compiled four runner-up finishes.
On the women's side,
Meagan Grandgenett,
Courtney Rasmussen and
Noel Bentele turned in second-place finishes. Grandgenett placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.45 seconds. Teammate
Claire Severson was eighth in 10.23. Grandgenett also placed seventh in the 400 meters in 1:03.15. Meanwhile, teammate
Annaliese Pepin was third in 1:00.34.
Rasmussen finished a respectable second in the 5,000 meters, crossing the finish line in a time of 19:38.33.
Bentele also placed in two events. First, she was second in the weight throw with a toss of 51-01.50. She was also seventh in the shot put with a mark of 39-07.75.
In the high jump,
Karissa Pepin earned a tie for third place when she cleared 4-11.50.
Rounding out the Viking women's placers were
Allison Henke, who was seventh in the 600 meters in 1:45.28,
Kelly Kougl, who was eighth in the mile in 5:18.19 and
LeAnn Severson, who placed ninth in the 800 meters in 2:23.66.
For the Augustana men,
Matt Heesch led the way. Heesch finished second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:45.00.
Kevin Knapp was the only Viking to place in more than one event. His toss of 42-01.25 was good enough for fifth place in the shot put. He also placed sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 48-09.50.
Brian Werner was the next highest finisher for the Augie men as he finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.97. Lastly,
Paul Mallory was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.75 seconds.
