The Viking women's basketball team won its second game of the week with a 69-37 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday at the Elmen Center. The Vikings forced 25 total turnovers in a strong defensive effort.
The loss is the first for the Gusties this season, dropping them to 0-1 while the Vikings remain unbeaten at 2-0.
Augie got off to a quick lead, outscoring the Gusties 9-3 in the first 12 minutes of the game. A high amount of turnovers by both teams (Augustana with 11 and Gustavus with 17), made for a low-scoring first half as the Vikings led 25-12 at the break.
The Gusties scored the first four points of the half to cut the Viking lead to eight at 24-16 with 18:45 left to play. Augustana then scored 15 unanswered points, including a long 3-pointer by junior guard
Kristi Board. The run increased the deficit to 39-16 in favor of the Vikings.
Gustavus tried to battle back, but the Vikings wouldn't let them in, using strong defense to force eight more turnovers and collect 21 total steals. Augie kept the Gusties to just a 25.0 field goal percentage (13 of 52).
The Vikings also shot well, and were 41.2 percent (28 of 68) from the field.
Leading Augustana was sophomore forward
Faith Tinklenberg, who scored a career-high 15 points on 6 of 15 from the field. Junior #Megan Doyle added 12 points and tied her career-high with four steals.
The Vikings will have a week off before they take on conference foe Concordia-St. Paul in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Holiday Hoopsfest on Nov. 28 at the Sioux Falls Arena. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
