Viking Women Glide Past Northern State

Box Score

The Augustana women's basketball team won its second conference game of the weekend as they defeated Northern State Saturday night at the Elmen Center. The Vikings forced 23 turnovers and recorded 14 steals in the 73-51 win.

The Vikings improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while the Wolves fell to 3-4 and 0-2 in conference play.

Augie started the game by outscoring NSU 21-8 in the first 9:12, with all of the points for the Wolves coming from junior forward Jodi Reinschmidt. Augie was able to build the lead thanks in part to a hot streak from behind the arc, with freshman forward Alex Feeney draining two threes and junior guard Megan Doyle sinking one of her own.

The rest of the Wolves started getting involved, and a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Emily Becken brought the Wolves to within 10 at 24-14 with 6:51 left in the half.

The Vikings continued to play tough defense, forcing nine turnovers and collecting four steals in the half. This allowed Augie to increase their lead again, only allowing the Wolves to make two field goals in the last six minutes of the half, and outscoring them 13-9 to take a 37-23 halftime lead.

NSU's junior center Krista Rabenberg blocked five shots in the first half alone.

NSU scored six quick points to start the half with the Vikings only scoring one point off of a free throw. Augie didn't make a field goal for nearly the first two minutes of the second half, but a circus shot by sophomore guard Molly Hayes fell at 18:01 to make the score 40-29.

Back-to-back threes from Hayes and junior forward Kristi Board gave the Vikings a 46-29 lead, but NSU went on a small 7-2 run to draw within 48-36 with just over ten minutes to play.

Augie then sank three more three-pointers, two jumpers and two free throws in the next four minutes, while only allowing the Wolves to score one jumper, making the score 63-48 with 4:56 on the clock. NSU failed to put a final run together and the Vikings walked away with the 22-point victory.

The Vikings shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field, and 40 percent (10 of 35) from three-point range.

Hayes led all scorers with 16 points, and collected four steals while dishing out seven assists. Board contributed a season-high 14 points, and Feeney set a career-high with 12 points. Also in double-digits was Doyle with 10 points.
