The Augustana women's softball team dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Emporia State Tournament in Emporia, Kan. Sunday, losing 3-1 to the University of Nebraska-Omaha and 5-4 to Truman State University.
Game 1
In the first game of the day, Augie (1-10) could not get things going offensively, combining for 2 hits, as UNO pitcher Melissa Negrete went 7 innings for the win.
Britt Stewart (1-3) threw 7 innings for Augie, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits. Augie made 2 errors in the game.
Traci Fransen and
Kelsey Kalkman were the only players to get a hit for Augustana, while
Kayla Henke scored the lone run for the Vikings.
Game 2
Against Truman State, the Vikings played the Bulldogs closely, but stranded two runs in the top of the seventh inning and gave up a walk-off single in the bottom half of the inning to lose 5-4.
The Vikings had runners on first and second base with 1 out in the top of the seventh, but the Bulldogs pitcher stuck out 2 straight batters to stop the bleeding.
Truman State capitalized on an Augie mistake in the bottom half of the seventh. After a double and a sacrifice bunt, the Bulldogs had a runner on third base and the next batter connected for a single to score the winning run.
Augie combined for 10 hits in the game, while giving up 9 hits to the Bulldogs, as Henke led the Vikings at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homerun, double and single, while scoring 2 runs.
Chelsey Durland took the loss on the mound for Augie, as the Vikings finished the tournament with a 1-4 record.
The Vikings will now travel to Kissimmee, Fla. for six games in the Rebel Spring Game tournament. On Thursday, Augie will take on the University of Central Missouri at 1 p.m. and will follow it with a 3 p.m. contest with Massachusetts-Lowell.
