Augie Baseball Splits NSIC Doubleheader With Concordia

The Augustana baseball team split its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader, losing 8-5 to the University of Concordia, St. Paul before pounding the Golden Bears 13-1 in the second game Saturday in Minnetonka, Minn.

Augie is now 9-6 overall this season and 1-1 in the NSIC, while the No. 18-ranked Golden Bears sit at 16-4 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC.

Game 1
The Vikings got on the board in the first inning, as Tom Hilll ed the game off with a double to left center and then stole third before scoring on a infield ground ball from Charlie Dubanoski.

The Golden Bears fired back with a 3-run bottom half of the first and followed it with another 3-run inning in the second to knock Augie starting pitcher JaColby Anderson out of the game.

Anderson (2-2) went 1.2 innings, giving up 6 runs on 6 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1 batter.

Augie got back on the board in the top of the third inning when Nate Baumann connected on a 2-run home run over the left field fence to cut the lead in half with Concordia out in front 6-3.

The Golden Bears added a run in the fourth and fifth inning as the Vikings scored a run in both the sixth and seventh inning to fall short of a comeback.

Baumann was the only Viking with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and a home run.
Nick Lehnen and Tim Duffy finished the game on the mound for Augie. Lehnen went 2.1 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits, while Duffy gave up 1 run on 3 hits in 2.0 innings.

Game 2
Augustana combined for 15 hits and 13 runs in the second game, scoring early and often.

For the second game in a row, Hill led off with a double. He then advanced to third on a single up the middle from Ian Strum.

On the very next pitch, Baumann sent the Concordia offering over the right center fence for the second game in a row to make it 3-0 before the Golden Bears could record an out.

Then in the top of the third inning, the Vikings put together a 6 run inning on 6 hits, as Hill again started the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground to the pitcher.

Baumann collected his fourth RBI of the day on a single to left field to go up 4-0. Then with 1 out and runners on the corners, Anderson hit a second 3-run home run. The Vikings scored two more runs in the inning as Andy Ahrendt double down the left field line to make the score 9-0.

Augustana keep things rolling in the next inning, as Anderson connected on a single to left field with the bases loaded, and Gates Cook drove in the a pair of runs on a single to stretch the lead to 12-0. Augie added a final run in the top of the seventh inning on a double from Drew Heithoff.

Tyler Pierson (2-3) pitched a gem on the mound for Augie, giving up just 2 hits and no earned runs in 6 innings of work. He also struck out a season-high 9 batters in the game. Cody Kontz pitched the final scoreless inning.

Offensively, Hill went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Baumann finished the game 2-for-5 with 4 RBI and a home run. Anderson finished the game 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and a home run.

The Vikings will stay in Minnetonka for a second doubleheader with the Golden Bears Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader is at 11 a.m. at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn.
