The Augie offense was unable to score a single run in both games of a doubleheader to lose 3-0 and 8-0 to the Saint Leo University Lions Tuesday in Saint Leo, Fla.
The Vikings return from its Rebel Spring Games trip to Florida with a 5-16 overall record, while the Lions improved to 25-12 overall this season.
Game 1
The Vikings struggled offensively for the third game in a row as Saint Leo's Ashley Urbanik (15-10) nearly no-hit Augustana in a 3-0 win. Urbanik had a no-hitter with 2 more outs to go in the game, but
Traci Fransen ended it all with a double to the left center gap.
Chelsey Durland (1-3) made her fourth start of the season for the Vikings. She gave up 2 earned runs on 4 hits in 6 innings. Urbanik finished the game with 12 strike outs, while walking 2 and hitting 1 Augie batter.
The Lions scored first when leadoff hitter Tiffinee Harvey connected her second home run of the season with 2 outs in the bottom of the third inning.
Saint Leo scored again in the fifth, as the Lions led off with a single and moved the runner to second on a fielder's choice. The Lions scored an unearned run on the next at bat, as
Ally Rutherford made an error at shortstop to make it a 2-0 game.
The Lions then laid a sacrifice bunt down to move runners to second and third, as Harvey delivered again for Saint Leo on double to drive in the runner from third to score the final run of the game.
Game 2
Saint Leo had everything working in the second game of the doubleheader, as the Lions pounded out 14 hits, while holding the Vikings to 4 hits in an 8-0 game.
The Lions started its scoring in the first inning as Urbanik hit a single through the left side to go up 1-0.
After a triple to centerfield, Urbanik again drove in a single to put the Lions up 2-0 in the third inning. The next batter also singled to move Urbanik to second, while driving starting pitcher
Kelly Ottis (1-5) from the game.
Ottis left the game after giving up 2 runs on 7 hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Britt Stewart came in and got the Lions to hit into a double play to end the inning.
The Lions continued to score runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Harvey hit her second home run of the doubleheader to drive a pair of runs with 2 outs. The next batter Tatiana Casis then doubled down the left field line and scored on a single from Brittany Yates to go up 5-0.
Saint Leo added 3 more runs in the fifth inning to end in a collegiate run rule after five innings.
Stewart ended up giving up 6 runs on 6 hits in 2 innings of relief work, while
Mickey Anderson pitched 0.1 innings.
The Vikings will travel back home to play the University of Minnesota, Crookston (0-8) in its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. at Bowden Field.
