Augustana Baseball Loses First NSIC Home Game 3-2 Against Bemidji State

The Augustana baseball team dropped its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home game in a 3-2 loss to the Bemidji State Beavers Saturday at Ronken Field.

The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to loss of daylight and will be made up Sunday in conjunction with the originally scheduled twinbill.

The Vikings are now 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC with the loss, while the Beavers earned its first NSIC win and are 8-15 and 1-4 in the NSIC.

Augustana was able to get just 4 hits off Beaver's starting pitcher Brent Vollbrecht (2-2), as Tyler Pierson(2-4) gave up 3 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings on the mound for Augie to take the loss. 

The Beavers scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning on a RBI single from Bemidji State's Ryan Sander. 

Augie bounced back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, as Andy Ahrendt led the inning off with walk and advanced to second on an infield ground ball.

He then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored as Ian Strum hit a ground ball to first base for the RBI.

Bemidji State ended the tie quickly, scoring a run in the top of the fourth to take the 2-1 lead. The Beavers added another run in the sixth inning.

With Augustana down to its last out, JaColby Anderson stepped in a hit a deep home run over the right centerfield fence to cut the lead in half, but the game ended with a strikeout in the next at bat.

Bret Severtson pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief for Augustana. Anderson was the only Augie batter to have a multi-hit day going 2-for-3 while hitting his second home run of the season.

Both teams will compete in a three game set tomorrow with the first game to start at noon. All three games will be played at Ronken Field.
