The Augustana baseball team was able to win a pair of 1-run ball games against Bemidji State Sunday afternoon at Ronken Field, as they beat the Beavers 4-3 and 7-6.
With both wins, the Vikings are now 13-7 overall and 5-2 in the Northern Intercollegiate Conference. The Beavers drop to 8-17 and 1-6 in the NSIC.
Game 1
The Beavers started off the day of with a double from its lead off hitter Josh Silvernagel and after advancing to third base deep fly ball, Silvernagel scored on an infield ground ball to make it a quick 1-0 game after a half inning of play.
Augustana did not waist anytime and countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first when
Nate Baumann hit his sixth home run of the season over the right field fence.
Bemidji State took the lead back in the top of the third to make it a 2-1 game, before the Vikings busted out a 3-run fourth inning.
After drawing a walk and stealing second, Baumann scored on a
JaColby Anderson single to left field.
Then with the bases loaded,
Drew Heithoff connect on a game-winning hit to left, which scored
Brian Knight and Anderson to make it a 4-2 game.
The Beavers cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Vikings held Bemidji State scoreless in the final 2 innings to take the win.
Kenny Lidke remains perfect this season, improving to 3-0 after giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits in 4.2 innings.
Bret Severtson came in and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season.
Anderson went 2-for-3 in the game with a RBI and run scored, while Baumman went 1-for-2 with a home run and 2 runs scored.
Game 2
The Vikings found themselves down 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning after just giving up 3 runs in the top half of the sixth, but did not falter.
Augustana put together 4 runs on 2 hits to rally back for a 7-6 win.
Andy Ahrendt started things off with a lead off walk and was followed by a pinch hit single from
Mitch Anderson.
Both advanced a base on a wild pitch and duplicated the feat to score the first run of the inning.
Tom Hill then walked and stole second before
Ian Strum sent a deep fly ball to center to score Anderson and move Hill to third.
Hill completed his cycle of the base paths on another wild pitch to tie the game.
After a strikeout,
JaColby Anderson came to the plate with 2 down and delivered a game-winning home run over the left field fence to cap off the 4-run inning.
Jeff Green pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings to close out the game and improve to 3-0 on the season.
Per Nestigen started the game on the hill, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits in 4.1 innings, while striking out 1 batter.
Tim Duffy gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1.1 innings of relief work.
Offensively, Strum went 2-for-2 in the game while driving in a pair of runs. Green went 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored and Ahrendt finished 2-for-2 with a walk and 2 runs scored.
The final game of the day was cancelled due to loss of sunlight and will not be made up.
The Vikings will move on to play Morningside College in a doubleheader Tuesday. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Ronken Field.
