Behind individual titles by
Molly Clark and
Paul Mallory, the Augustana women's track and field team finished seventh and the men finished ninth at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which concluded Saturday in Wayne, Neb.
The Viking women scored 69.5 points to finish seventh, while the Augie men captured 50 points for their ninth-place finish.
Minnesota Duluth captured the women's team championship with a total of 156 points to edge out Minnesota State, which was second with 132.5 points. However, the Minnesota State men easily won the men's title with 193 points. UMD was second with 98 points.
Clark turned in a pair of impressive performances for the Viking women. Clark, a junior from Fargo, N.D., shattered the NSIC record in the steeplechase. Clark finished the race in an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time of 10:46.16. Her time bettered the previous NSIC record of 10:59.90, set by Tammy Stang of Minnesota Duluth in 2001. Laura Johnson finished sixth in 11:40.98.
After a 2-hour rest, Clark returned to the track to help Augustana finish second and third in the 5,000 meters.
Miranda Wagner finished second in the race in a time of 18:09.31, while Clark was third in 18:30.49.
Alyssa Anderson was a third Viking placer as she finished eighth in 19:01.88.
In other running events,
Kelly Kougl finished third in the 1,500 meters, crossing the finish line in 4:50.92. Meanwhile,
Bobbi Jo Buyck was sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.85 seconds. In addition,
Annaliese Pepin was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.98. Finally, the Vikings' 4X100 relay team finished fifth in a time of 49.03.
Mallory had a big day for the Viking men. Mallory won the Vikings' only conference title as he won the 110-meter hurdles in a winning time of 15.13 seconds. Mallory qualified fifth in the race in Friday's preliminaries.
But Mallory wasn't done as he finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.99.
Also finishing fifth was
Matt Braithwaite, who turned in a time of 15:33.31 in the 5,000 meters.
Brian Werner finished sixth in the 800 meters in a time of 1:57.24. In addition,
Halvard Lang was sixth in the 1,500 meters, crossing the finish line in 4:03.25.
The Vikings had 2 placers in the steeplechase.
Travis Beniak was the runner-up with a time of 9:24.44, which is an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time.
Nathaniel Petrich placed fifth in a time of 9:41.66.
In the field events,
Aaron Jung recorded a mark of 50-01.75 to finish fourth in the shot put. Meanwhile,
Tyler Lynch finished fifth in the discus with a toss of 146-04.0
