The Augustana volleyball team defeated Western Oregon Saturday in straight sets before losing to No. 19 ranked Lewis University 3-0 at the Colorado Premier Tournament in Denver, Colo.

Augustana, ranked No. 25 in the nation, is now 4-5 on the season. Western Oregon improved to 2-4 and Lewis is now 5-3.

Against Lewis, a kill by senior right side Ellen Andrews tied the score at 10 in the first set. The Vikings scored only six more points as serving runs by Kelly McConkey and Kim Richards put the set out of reach for the Vikings as they lost 25-16.

The second set was close the whole way until a kill from Sara DeBuhr, a Viking error, and a service ace by Ashlee Lindish gave the Flyers a 21-19 advantage. With Lewis up 24-21, the Vikings scored on a kill by Andrews and a Lewis attack error to make the score 24-23 before a kill by Kim Richards ended the set 25-23.

The Flyers took the lead right away in the third set after a kill by Adria Phillips put them up 9-4. The Vikings never made up the deficit and lost the third set 25-17.

Andrews had a team-high 12 kills and freshman setter Dani Haley had 29 assists.

In the Western Oregon, the teams traded points in the first set until a string of Western Oregon errors put the Vikings up 9-5. A serving run by Jenna Hultgren widened the Viking lead to 16-9, and Augie coasted to the 25-13 victory. Augustana recorded 15 kills and only three errors in the first set.

The Vikings dominated again in the second set, and a kill by sophomore middle Alex Burke put Augie ahead 9-5. A kill by Western Oregon's Irene Walters plus a few Viking errors moved the Wolves to within two at 14-12. Augie would only let Western Oregon score 3 more points on their way to a 25-15 victory.

The third set remained close with a block by Burke and sophomore outside Chantel Tengwall putting the Vikings ahead 9-7. Freshman libero Grace Sanders then served seven points in a row to give Augustana a 16-7 lead. The Wolves tied the game at 19 thanks to a scoring run of their own, but the Vikings held them off, winning 25-20.

Andrews led the team with 12 kills while freshman outside Megan Bezdicek added 7. Burke had 6 kills and Tengwall also contributed 6 kills, reaching a career-high.

Haley had 26 assists, and Sanders tallied 14 digs.

The Vikings will play next on Sept. 11 against Dowling University at the Concordia St. Paul Tournament in St. Paul , Minn. Match time is scheduled for noon.
