Bolstered by victories over two top 10 teams, the Augustana wrestling team jumped four spots to No. 6 in the latest 2009-10 Nationa Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division II Top 20 Poll, the NWCA released today.
In the two weeks since the last national rankings, the Vikings defeated then-No. 8 St. Cloud State and then No. 4 Minnesota State University, Mankato. Those wins helped the Vikings attain their highest ranking of the season.
Nebraska-Omaha is still No. 1 in the national rankings, while Newberry (S.C.) is still No. 2. Upper Iowa moved up to No. 3, while Pittsburgh-Johnstown and Wisconsin-Parkside round out the top 5.
Individually, Augustana has four wrestlers nationally-ranked in their respective weight classes.
Marcus Edgington is ranked No. 1 at 157 pounds while Ty Copsey is third at 197 pounds. Nate Herda is ranked fifth at 149 pounds and Jay Sherer is No. 7 at 141 pounds.
The Vikings have two duals scheduled this week. On Thursday, Augustana travels to Mitchell, S.D. to take on Dakota Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Then on Sunday, the Vikings visit Fayette, Iowa, to face Upper Iowa in a matchup of the top two teams in the NSIC. Both are 5-0 in the conference with two duals remaining.
