Augustana Softball Remains Unbeaten with Wins over Dowling, Lynn

Augustana's softball team opened its spring trip by sweeping a pair of games on Sunday. The Vikings downed Dowling 5-3 before rallying for an 8-7 victory over Lynn at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

The victories kept Augustana unbeaten on the year at 9-0.

Against Lynn, the Vikings won a game that saw four lead changes. Trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Augie began its comeback. Traci Fransen drew a 1-out walk and went to second on a single by Britt Stewart. Kelsey Kalkman followed with an RBI single that scored Fransen to tie the game and sent Stewart to third.

Following a fly out by Chelsey Durland, Brittany Coufal delivered a run-scoring single that scored Stewart with the game-winning run.

Fransen led the Viking offense by going 2-for-2 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Kalkman was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and Jenny Brown was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored. In addition, the Vikings stole 6 bases.

Stewart earned the win by pitching 4 innings of relief. She allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, and 7 hits while striking out only 1. Ashley Meyer started the game and went the first 3 innings. She allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits and struck out 2.

In the opener, Augustana jumped on Dowling for 4 runs in the top of the first inning. The Vikings took advantage of 3 Dowling walks and only 1 hit. Augie got on the scoreboard when Kayla Henke scored from third base on a squeeze bunt by Fransen. Kalkman added a bases loaded walk and Coufal plated 2 more runs with a single.

Augie's other run came when Kalkman belted a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning.

Durland earned the pitching win. She pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just 1 run on 6 hits.

Augustana will be in action on Monday when the Vikings take on Shepherd at 1 p.m. EDT and New York Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. EDT.
